Born Janine Castillo, J-Nine started singing when she was only four years old. She was heavily influenced by her dad’s favourite OPM singers including power vocalists like Sarah G and Regine Velásquez. Janine would continue honing her skills throughout high school with singing classes and public speaking to build her confidence for public performances. She also started playing the guitar which helped her discover her individuality as a singer.
Discovering J-Nine was considerably coincidental when she was modelling for her now fellow label mates, VVS Collective, in their music video “KABADO”. During the video shoot’s after-party, the group had heard her sing and was immediately taken aback by her talent. Soon after, King Promdi offered to collaborate with her, and their song ‘GG’ was released.
The 20-year-old singer is now balancing her studies and a singing career. She is actively putting out covers online but is also writing originals which she hopes to release in the future. When asked about other artists who influenced her style, J-Nine credits Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and the artists of 88Rising as major inspirations and aspirations. She also hopes to collaborate with OPM artists such as Kiyo, Arther Nery, and Gloc-9, among others. Now signed under Def Jam Philippines, something tells us that her dreams may not be as improbable as she once thought.
